তোমরা পথে ঘাটে এ কারণে বসে থেকো না যে, আল্লাহ বিশ্বাসীদেরকে হুমকি দিবে, আল্লাহর পথে বাধা সৃষ্টি করবে এবং তাতে বক্রতা অনুসন্ধান করবে। স্মরণ কর, যখন তোমরা সংখ্যায় অল্প ছিলে অতঃপর আল্লাহ তোমাদেরকে অধিক করেছেন এবং লক্ষ্য কর কিরূপ অশুভ পরিণতি হয়েছে অনর্থকারীদের।
"And squat not on every road, breathing threats, hindering from the path of Allah those who believe in Him, and seeking in it something crooked; But remember how ye were little, and He gave you increase. And hold in your mind's eye what was the end of those who did mischief. |

তিনিই সে মহান সত্তা, যিনি বানিয়েছেন সুর্যকে উজ্জল আলোকময়, আর চন্দ্রকে স্নিগ্ধ আলো বিতরণকারীরূপে এবং অতঃপর নির্ধারিত করেছেন এর জন্য মনযিল সমূহ, যাতে করে তোমরা চিনতে পার বছরগুলোর সংখ্যা ও হিসাব। আল্লাহ এই সমস্ত কিছু এমনিতেই সৃষ্টি করেননি, কিন্তু যথার্থতার সাথে। তিনি প্রকাশ করেন লক্ষণসমূহ সে সমস্ত লোকের জন্য যাদের জ্ঞান আছে।
It is He Who made the sun to be a shining glory and the moon to be a light (of beauty), and measured out stages for her; that ye might know the number of years and the count (of time). Nowise did Allah create this but in truth and righteousness. (Thus) doth He explain His Signs in detail, for those who understand. |

অতঃপর আমি তোমাদের জন্যে তাদের বিরুদ্ধে পালা ঘুয়িয়ে দিলাম, তোমাদেরকে ধন-সম্পদ ও পুত্রসন্তান দ্বারা সাহায্য করলাম এবং তোমাদেরকে জনসংখ্যার দিক দিয়ে একটা বিরাট বাহিনীতে পরিণত করলাম।
Then did We grant you the Return as against them: We gave you increase in resources and sons, and made you the more numerous in man-power. |

অজ্ঞাত বিষয়ে অনুমানের উপর ভিত্তি করে এখন তারা বলবেঃ তারা ছিল তিন জন; তাদের চতুর্থটি তাদের কুকুর। একথাও বলবে; তারা পাঁচ জন। তাদের ছষ্ঠটি ছিল তাদের কুকুর। আরও বলবেঃ তারা ছিল সাত জন। তাদের অষ্টমটি ছিল তাদের কুকুর। বলুনঃ আমার পালনকর্তা তাদের সংখ্যা ভাল জানেন। তাদের খবর অল্প লোকই জানে। সাধারণ আলোচনা ছাড়া আপনি তাদের সম্পর্কে বিতর্ক করবেন না এবং তাদের অবস্থা সম্পর্কে তাদের কাউকে জিজ্ঞাসাবাদ ও করবেন না।
(Some) say they were three, the dog being the fourth among them; (others) say they were five, the dog being the sixth,- doubtfully guessing at the unknown; (yet others) say they were seven, the dog being the eighth. Say thou: "My Lord knoweth best their number; It is but few that know their (real case)." Enter not, therefore, into controversies concerning them, except on a matter that is clear, nor consult any of them about (the affair of) the Sleepers. |

তাঁর কাছে তাদের পরিসংখ্যান রয়েছে এবং তিনি তাদেরকে গণনা করে রেখেছেন।
He does take an account of them (all), and hath numbered them (all) exactly. |

দাউদ বললঃ সে তোমার দুম্বাটিকে নিজের দুম্বাগুলোর সাথে সংযুক্ত করার দাবী করে তোমার প্রতি অবিচার করেছে। শরীকদের অনেকেই একে অপরের প্রতি জুলুম করে থাকে। তবে তারা করে না, যারা আল্লাহর প্রতি বিশ্বাসী ও সৎকর্ম সম্পাদনকারী। অবশ্য এমন লোকের সংখ্যা অল্প। দাউদের খেয়াল হল যে, আমি তাকে পরীক্ষা করছি। অতঃপর সে তার পালনকর্তার কাছে ক্ষমা প্রার্থনা করল, সেজদায় লুটিয়ে পড়ল এবং তাঁর দিকে প্রত্যাবর্তন করল।
(David) said: "He has undoubtedly wronged thee in demanding thy (single) ewe to be added to his (flock of) ewes: truly many are the partners (in business) who wrong each other: Not so do those who believe and work deeds of righteousness, and how few are they?"... and David gathered that We had tried him: he asked forgiveness of his Lord, fell down, bowing (in prostration), and turned (to Allah in repentance). |

তারা কি পৃথিবীতে ভ্রমণ করেনি? করলে দেখত, তাদের পূর্ববর্তীদের কি পরিণাম হয়েছে। তারা তাদের চেয়ে সংখ্যায় বেশী এবং শক্তি ও কীর্তিতে অধিক প্রবল ছিল, অতঃপর তাদের কর্ম তাদেরকে কোন উপকার দেয়নি।
Do they not travel through the earth and see what was the End of those before them? They were more numerous than these and superior in strength and in the traces (they have left) in the land: Yet all that they accomplished was of no profit to them. |

এমনকি যখন তারা প্রতিশ্রুত শাস্তি দেখতে পাবে, তখন তারা জানতে পারবে, কার সাহায্যকারী দূর্বল এবং কার সংখ্যা কম।
At length, when they see (with their own eyes) that which they are promised,- then will they know who it is that is weakest in (his) helper and least important in point of numbers. |

যাতে আল্লাহ তা’আলা জেনে নেন যে, রসূলগণ তাঁদের পালনকর্তার পয়গাম পৌছিয়েছেন কি না। রসূলগণের কাছে যা আছে, তা তাঁর জ্ঞান-গোচর। তিনি সবকিছুর সংখ্যার হিসাব রাখেন।
"That He may know that they have (truly) brought and delivered the Messages of their Lord: and He surrounds (all the mysteries) that are with them, and takes account of every single thing." |

আমি জাহান্নামের তত্ত্বাবধায়ক ফেরেশতাই রেখেছি। আমি কাফেরদেরকে পরীক্ষা করার জন্যেই তার এই সংখ্যা করেছি-যাতে কিতাবীরা দৃঢ়বিশ্বাসী হয়, মুমিনদের ঈমান বৃদ্ধি পায় এবং কিতাবীরা ও মুমিনগণ সন্দেহ পোষণ না করে এবং যাতে যাদের অন্তরে রোগ আছে, তারা এবং কাফেররা বলে যে, আল্লাহ এর দ্বারা কি বোঝাতে চেয়েছেন। এমনিভাবে আল্লাহ যাকে ইচ্ছা পথভ্রষ্ট করেন এবং যাকে ইচ্ছা সৎপথে চালান। আপনার পালনকর্তার বাহিনী সম্পর্কে একমাত্র তিনিই জানেন এটা তো মানুষের জন্যে উপদেশ বৈ নয়।
And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. |
